The application of deck paint and stain is very similar. Both require a thorough pre-treatment that includes washing, sanding, and two coats.
The way you use your deck will rely on your personal tastes and style. While stain reveals more of the wood’s inherent grain, paint offers more colour options. When used properly, both approaches can give you a finish that is durable.
The deck finish that causes the most confusion is the one that has a solid stain on it. Often times, It’s an opaque stain, yet most people think it’s paint.
Deck stain products give the best adherence and wear regardless of the final appearance you choose. Here are some questions you might ask yourself if your deck is made of bare wood to help you decide whether to use a solid colour stain, semi-transparent stain, or transparent stain.
Weather conditions
Your deck is more vulnerable to damaging UV radiation than usual if it receives a lot of direct sunshine. In dry, wooded areas, more opaque stains are preferable because they enable excess moisture to escape, whereas solid stains offer more protection from the sun’s harmful rays.
Type of wood
Why not highlight the natural grain and texture of your deck’s pricey, gorgeous wood with a light translucent stain rather than masking it with a solid stain? On the other hand, a solid stain will offer a more uniform appearance integrating the old with the new if your deck is old and faded and some of the boards have been replaced.
Preferred look
A light-colored transparent stain will provide some colour while letting the wood grain come through if you prefer the rustic appearance of natural wood. With its full coverage and more contemporary appearance, a solid stain allows you to go bold and colourful by forming amusing patterns and designs.
Solid stains provide more pigment to give your deck protection from the sun’s damaging rays and bad weather. It can hide damage and discolouration and is thick enough to fill in small gaps and fissures. Based on the amount of pigment in the stain, transparent (and semi-transparent) stains let you regulate how much of the wood’s natural grain shows through. There are numerous colour options available, and since stain is permeable to water, unwanted moisture can escape, lowering the risk of wood rot.
Clear
For wood with a gorgeous grain pattern you don’t want to cover up, clear stain provides the most natural look.
Tinted
Add a hint of subtle color while letting the wood grain and texture show through with a tinted stain.
Semitransparent
Semitransparent stains are a fantastic option for older decks with replacement boards since they help balance out the tone. You will still be able to see some of the wood grain even with the additional pigment.
Solid
Solid stain conceals flaws and offers the highest UV protection of all these alternatives if your deck is stained or damaged. There won’t be any visible wood grain, though.
